Messi Makes Unwanted FIFA World Cup History!

Lionel Messi

Despite Argentina booking their place in the round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi made unwanted competition history following his missed penalty in the first half.

Xavi Responds To Big Messi Question

The South American giants advanced to the last 16 after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Poland, courtesy of goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez.

The Premier League duo struck in the second half to help Argentina finish atop Group C, with their opponents on the night perhaps fortunate to qualify for the first knockout round on goal difference.

Messi, though, could have put his nation ahead six minutes before the break but squandered his chance from the penalty spot following an excellent diving save from Juventus shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny.

With his miss, the 35-year-old became the first player in the history of the World Cup to be denied from the spot on two occasions, after missing a penalty against Iceland in the 2018 edition.

Against Poland, the Paris Saint-Germain forward failed to add to his tally of two goals in Qatar, with Argentina now set to take on Australia on Saturday for a place among the final eight.
