Late Show As City Denied First Play-Off Win

Casric Stars struck late in the second half to rescue a 1-1 draw against Cape Town City in the PSL promotion play-offs on Wednesday.

The Citizens were boosted by the return of Thamsanqa Mkhize, Lorenzo Gordinho, Aprocius Petrus and Thabo Nodada following the goalless draw against Orbit College over the weekend.

It was Stars who made the lively start to the contest as Decide Chauke was presented with two big chances to put his side ahead, however City goalkeeper Darren Keet was able to make two important saves.

It took a while for the Citizens get going but they eventually regained control and started moving the ball around, although they struggled to carve out clear-cut chances.

City, however, got their reward in the 26th minute Prins Tjiueza got the first goal of the play-offs after latching onto Mkhize's knockdown before firing past Stars goalkeeper Lako Wendeu.

That proved to be City's final big chance of the half, but the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit struggled to fashion any openings of their own in the final stages of the first half.

The home side responded with a few changes with around 25 minutes left on the clock, introducing the likes of Simon Moukete, Katlego Molaba, Ofentse Mothapo and former City striker Kermit Erasmus.

Stars pushed for an equaliser as the second half went on, and they went extremely close in the 75th minute when but the Citizens managed to survive with a goal-line clearance. much to the frustration of the home supporters.

The home side, however, were afforded a lifeline in second-half stoppage time after being awarded a penalty, which Sphamandla Milo converted to earn his side their second point of the play-offs.

All three sides are now on two points, but City currently sit while Stars and Orbit will be back in action on Saturday.
